Kathy & Andy came to Sedona all the way from London to get married! Kathy was positively giddy around Andy and even during the ceremony you could see how much fun these two have together. The entire wedding was outdoors, which was gorgeous but a tad cold toward the evening hours. At Rancho Los Lagos in Sedona we are able to drive up to a spectacular view of Cathedral Rock. There are so many great shots from this event, you have to view the slideshow. Details for this event were coordinated by Weddings in Sedona and included Simply Delicious, and Showstoppers. Congratulations!

Laura + Nate | Flagstaff, AZ

Laura and Nate were married on a beautiful October day here in Flagstaff. It was a tad chillier than they had hoped but Forest Highlands has a fantastic backup location: the Meadow clubhouse and I have to tell you, I LOVED it. Beautiful chairs, cozy fireplace, windows everywhere and of course made a gorgeous 'aisle carpet' of flowers. Everyone stayed warm and it was really lovely. Nate won some serious brownie points by surprising Laura with a vacation planned for 2009 in Greece. If every groom could pull that rabbit out of a hat on the wedding day, you would be smiling like Laura.

Jake Bacon and Family Christmas cards

I photographed Jake Bacon's family the other day. He helps me second shoot weddings from time to time. He's the photo editor of the Arizona Daily Sun newspaper.

This session was a good example of making the house location work for us. One of my favorite things is to shoot inside and outside the family's house. Often, I can find little nooks that make for great portraits. Later, in terms of family history, these photographs will carry great importance. It's the house where your first baby was born or where you got married and made so many memories together. It's important that the house not be forgotten as a part of your family history!

Mini Session & Holiday Card Special

For all of you who have yet to get a Holiday card together-- we have a great last minute opportunity for you to schedule a mini photo shoot at our studio. We are using a simple red wall that can be either red or gray (if you opt for black and white).

Here's how it works: We are offering 5 mini portrait sessions at our studio this Saturday, Monday and Tuesday afternoons - December 13th, 15th & 16th starting at 2:30PM. Each session will last no longer than 20 minutes.

The special session fee will be $125 and includes a set of 25 cards and envelopes. Additional sets of 25 cards are available for $75

What to wear: Black tops looked good for our trial session and is always flattering but solid colored tops will do. Consider that the background is red and try not to wear white.

You will be able to choose the photo from your session that afternoon to add to your choice of holiday cards. We are offering three options of cards for this shoot.

option 1: plain folded textured linen card with photo on front with 2 line custom greeting on the inside.

option 2: flat 5x7 card with photo inset to template below. 2 lines of custom text on the back of card

option 3: flat 5x7 card with photo inset to template below. 2 lines of custom text on the back of card

My daughter Naomi, 5 years old, is in her first year of ballet and had the opportunity to be in the Nutcracker this year. I feel like I've transitioned into a whole new world of motherhood this week. My baby is a little girl. It's so much fun! I snuck in for a few photos during their dress rehearsal to play with the new D3- these were all hand held shot at 6400 ISO. Not too bad.

I fell behind on the ole' blog. There I said it. It's tough to keep the 10,000 image workflow fast and furious. I'm still catching my breath after delivering a baby, adjusting to a new baby... remodeling and opening a new studio downtown.

I'm spending the winter catching up! As I poured over wedding images tonight, I got teary -- no, I really did. I do love my job and sometimes when I spend some time with the photographs it calms me... I've been stressed out lately. I can't wait for you all to see your images... there are some priceless moments in here and I just did a cursory edit.

I picked some fun images to show here. You are all truly beautiful. I was honored to witness so much true love this fall.

Camille and Brian were so easy going and so in love. They planned a Flagstaff destination wedding from Phoenix. The day started out pretty cloudy and we weren't sure if mother nature was going to cooperate... but she did! Camille giggled with joy when the sunset turned out to be exactly as she had hoped. It was gorgeous. These two were off to Greece after their wedding and I was jealous!

WPJA Trash the Dress Contest 5th Place

More exciting news! I won 5th place in the first ever Wedding Photojournalist Association Trash the Dress contest. I feel pretty honored because it seemed like the Polish took this award.

Trashing the Dress is a "post wedding" photo session where the bride and groom take some chances and are not afraid to "trash" the wedding dress. If you are interested, it's really fun and we can make some really AWESOME images. I have really wanted to do some of these session in the RED dirt in Sedona or in Oak Creek. After all, when are you really going to wear your wedding dress again? Saving it for your daughter? Did YOU want to wear YOUR mother's wedding 20-30 year-old gown? I didn't think so.... your dress is made for YOUR event and frankly I'm ready to make the most of it. They actually wash up pretty well. My buddy Matt sometimes calls it the "Wash the Dress" session.

Have Baby will Travel

So the first trip we took when Owen was 5 months was bad, REAL bad. Second one, not so bad. The difference is that he actually slept on this second trip and didn't scream in the cars when we traveled places. MAJOR improvement. We drove to Tucson to shoot a wedding last Saturday and the 5 hour drive was the longest he's been on and he did great... I did have to entertain him for the last hour of the ride, but otherwise, success!

Grand Opening Party

It's been one thing after another and our Grand Opening was a huge success. Finally, everything is done for our space-- even the lighting is up!

It's an amazing feeling to have your work on the wall and everyone talking about it. It is something that I didn't expect to experience with my wedding work... as it's not really "sell-able" to anyone except the family of the client.

It was a funny feeling when I looked over at Jamelle and the mass of people Thursday night and realized everyone had come to our party for US! It was humbling and awesome. I had clients, vendors, friends and family. Special thanks to Hollye Schumacher and Stuart Thurkill who came up all the way from Phoenix and documented the event while we were too busy to do so ourselves.

We'd really like to thank all the vendors who helped us pull this off.

Steve Douglas of Artists in Rhythm played with a Gypsy Jazz trio! Everyone commented about how great the music was! Andrea from Sedona Cake Couture made an incredible chocolate camera cake for us --delicious! Kim Duncan pull off the PR and event coordination for this event... which was fantastic. Simply Delicious made some awesome little bites to eat and a local wine shop, Vino Loco poured incredible wines for us all night. Showstoppers made some beautiful arrangements for us and other wedding peeps and photographers in attendance... Karen Lynn, Katrina Wallace, Dawn Kish, Raechel Running, John Running, Melissa Dunstan, Tina Juberg, Heather Kadar, Karen Sorenson, Donna Shoemaker and Yvonne Baca all came to show their support. Special thanks to Jason Hasenbank from the Flagstaff Photography Center for helping us get event day up and running and for the use of the beautiful gallery next door to our studio-- the photo booth was a huge hit because everyone always loves to get old fashion photo booth pictures!

Just for Fun

Ijust wanted to give a little update on our crazy business merger, studio opening and phone, email, webpage and general computer chaos!!

We moved into our cute little space the first week of October and so far the transition has been ...well... umm...less than productive. It took a miracle to get our phone number ported. The webpage is a little behind schedule, which caused (and is still causing) some interesting email mishaps and an overall general stress level that I don't wish upon anyone. Every morning Cameron and I come to work and make the statement that some day, life will resume as normal.I have a feeling that it may never come.

However; we do try and have fun every now and again. This morning we were the ones behind the camera for a change --and in the process I snapped a few fun photos of Cameron.

Below is one of the great canvas prints we will have hanging at the Party this Thursday night. I love HUGE prints.

The first year we lived here I remember substitute teaching when these girls were in 7th and 8th grade. Goes to show you-- they grow up fast! These girls are triplets and all very different, as I think you can tell. Matt works with their Mom at his middle school. You look beautiful, girls!

HOW does anyone raise three babies? I have no idea. I have the ultimate respect for any woman who births more than one baby at a time (HA that is the easy part, try diapering three babies at once...)?

Meet Jamelle Kelly, my new business partner and amazing woman. Jamelle lives here in Flagstaff with her husband Jeff and their 5 year-old daughter Naomi. She put the Kelly in Cameron + Kelly Studios and I am so glad to have her on board. Here are a couple cute shots of Jamelle from our Oct. 19 wedding we shot at L'Auberge. The lovely, Karen Lynn in the background.

Yes, Jamelle shoots Nikon and I shoot Canon, but it works for us. Since I used to be a Nikon shooter, I fondly looked over her shoulder as she used her D3 for the first time this weekend. Can't wait to see those images at 24,000,000 ISO.

Time for cuteness. Okay, I am NOT one of those people who dresses their baby is in their college Alma mater insignia left and right. Hey, if you are, more power to you, I'm just not that attached to the University of Georgia and I don't like to "brand" my child so much, nope--just not my particular style. HOWEVER, Aunt Collette hand knit this sweater without a pattern and well, it's pretty darn cute.

I remember the first time I was on campus with my pal Jon McKenna, we were actually in Athens for a mountain bike ride from the ATL and it went something like this...

JM: "Hey Cameron, stick your head out the window at those people and yell GO DAWGS and bark."

me: I am not barking at strangers out a car window.

JM: (sticks head out window) "GO DAWGS SICK 'EM WOOF WOOF WOOF!!"

me: slinking down in my seat, look-of-disbelief

strangers: hands in air, pumping fists, "WOOF WOOF WOOF"

The only UGA game I ever went to I was on the field photographing it for the Athens Banner-Herald. That was a joke, but for another blog post. Let's just say the editor said,

"I'll send you to games for features not sports, Cameron."

I mean who can pay attention to every first down, every play? it's exhausting and not to mention riddled with macho male shooters. You have to be the ULTIMATE fan to photograph football. Opinion mia.

Joni + James | "the making of Joni Bozzone"

Loved this couple. Jamelle and I agreed that every guest at this wedding seemed so delighted to be sharing in this L'Auberge de Sedon a day. We really loved the 'wishing rocks' -- everyone took a rock and placed it in a special box and made a wish during the ceremony. Great idea! It was hot-hot-hot but Joni and James looked cool, calm and collected. Joni got ready at El Portal, which makes for some nice portrait opportunities. Liz Margin did her makeup and Raymond Rodriguez styled her hair and flower design by Kathy Switzer. It was a stellar combination. Fun facts about this wedding include: Joni's maid of honor and best friend is dating James's brother and Joni grew up in a house that is around the corner from my own house here in Flagstaff. Joni went to High School in Sedona-- it's rare to photograph a 'local' wedding in Sedona... everyone is a transplant and there are so many destination events. Bozzone is pronounced Buh-ZONE- ee... so it's Joni's new name is perfect: Joni Bozzone. I love it!

Brigit + Bret + a little gift in the Aspens

Brigit and Bret got married! BUT BUT BUT!! I wanted to shoot their wedding, as you can see, who wouldn't? We heard the whole story on the way up to this beautiful spot in the Aspens...

They got engaged and went to NYC for a function and on a whim decided to go ahead and tie the knot right then and there at a NYC courthouse. They went to the diamond district and POOF! Done. Married. Clearly, they were not dreaming of the fabulous wedding photos, like I was, but I gave them the gift of a photo session for their "wedding." Clearly getting married in a courthouse is THE way to really save $$$ on your event; however, if you do this, you should still hire someone (ahhHEM, me) to take some great shots becuase as you can see.. it's worth it. :)

We hiked 20 minutes into the woods for this particular Aspen grove and a favorite tree of Brigit's. I love how that pine is all alone in the middle of Aspens. This year, the Aspen leaves turned gold and 1 minute later they fell to the ground here in Flagstaff. We had two really cold and windy days and this was one of them. Brigit and Bret were great subjects... Thanks guys!

Baby Dreyson

Newborns can be so CUTE, especially if you get one like Dreyson who sleeps all the time. We usually shoot newborns inside the home- in this case on mom's bed.

A little note on photographing a newborn baby photo session. It's always best to catch newborns in the first two weeks i.e by day 14. So please schedule before the baby is born to be sure to get on the calendar... we'll be flexible.

Studio update and computers

So we finally got the computers into the studio yesterday and today they got networked and a little TLC --Thanks Peter! Some bad bad program had turned on some annoying hidden folders thing and it was driving me crazy. Anyway, it's fixed and Jamelle can now access my files and vice versa. THANK GOODNESS!!! HD is fixed, DSL line coming Friday....phone line sometime next week and until then I'm stealing my neighbor's DSL.... (they know so maybe it's not stealing). So tomorrow (my birthday) will be the FIRST day of work in the studio. So if you are patiently waiting for something from me, I assure you, you won't wait much longer. I'm back on the train. PHEW. This studio thing has been tougher than I thought. So much jumbling up and disrupting my already insanly disrupped (ah-hem, Owen) life. I feel HIGH productively coming my way... so watch out... and put Nov. 13th on your calendar -- it's our GRAND OPENING PARTY!! So fun. So fun. Can't wait... tons of wedding peeps, friends, countrymen, etc.

We are wrapping up High School Senior season! Laurie was tons of fun and we took a few photos right outside the new studio and then headed to the pool. Laurie's a swimmer at Flag High and wanted to include some pool shots. We love to incorporate fun parts of your lifestyle in these shoots. Unfortunately the weather was... ummm pretty darn COLD!! and the outdoor pool is no longer heated, but AMAZING laurie jumped in and tried her hardest to look warm and cute. I think she pulled it off quite nicely. Tons of fun!! Kate + Norm are getting married!

Matt and I are delighted that my sister Kate is getting married to a great guy, Norm. We almost made "Norm for brother-in-law" t-shirts when we met him, but we didn't want to jinx the situation! They were VERY fun to photograph and we all had a good time making these images. They are a charming couple--both are Wildland firefighters--HotShots-- Norm on Mormon Lake crew and Kate on the Flagstaff Hotshots. Some photos are in order with the chainsaws but I thought we'd see how they clean up.

The planets aligned for us because Jamelle left a photo stand in the exact spot where we were finishing up some portraits and thank goodness we were able to get a little flash flavor(ah hem, the last four). Thanks Jamelle! I don't normally post 14 photos BUT hey, it's my sister, and I really like how these images turned out. I reinvented Flagstaff downtown and tried NOT to go to my usual spots. Kate has the most amazing blue eyes EVER. One tip for couples is to laugh a lot be yourself and HAVE FUN. I promise it will show through in the photos.

I didn't even PhotoShop these files. All images are straight out of Lightroom. I was too excited to mess around with PS.

*side note* I am experimenting with our branding and "striping" these photos with our logo. The whole logo blog thing...I'm on the fence. Comments?

Genevieve - Seniors!!

Studio update and #1, DONE!

Kim and I had fun unpacking furniture last Sunday and Jamelle and I spent last week moving more furnishings into the space. We has our "soft" opening Friday Oct 3... and we will move the computers in there sometime this week which means we'll be working in our studio soon! We are so happy with how it turned out. Isn't it cute? I am in love with our sign. This is our meeting space behind our work area (coffee table came damaged, so they are sending a new one). I had to shoot quick because a little penguin was getting fussy this morning while I was downtown. I will get better interiors (with better light) when we get set up a bit more... till then here is a tease...

Nov. 13 is our Grand Opening party when we'll hang a wedding art show next door in the Flagstaff Photography Center. We will be open for First Friday Flagstaff November.

**update on HD** After hours on the phone with Apple and then Adobe (Lightroom decided to quit as well), I've fixed my technical difficulties (including Apple shipping me a new iPhone) and am back at the editing table. Technical difficulties set me back, oh yes, they do. In this business you don't want to risk losing any data, which I didn't, thank goodness. All is well in Apple-land. :)

Sarah & RJ - slideshow

Sarah and RJ called me about 6 weeks before their event. I left August open as part of my "don't-do-too-much-you-just-had-a-baby" booking policy. Sometimes, though, you just want to get back to work. I did an "Owen special" for this event and covered it for a few hours. It rained HARD directly after the ceremony so we went back out on another day and got some studio shots and some GREAT sunflower portraits. **Note to future August Flagstaff brides** It rains almost every afternoon in August during our Monsoon season but don't worry, rain is good luck and it makes fun puddles to photograph.

Kiley Brown 4.5 months

I went back over to the Brown household and chatted it up with my friend, Tamara, you know---breastfeeding, sleeping, teething--fun mommy talk. Kiley sleeps 10 hours uninterrupted. No, I'm not kidding. 8PM-6AM and recently did 7:30PM-7:30AM. I'm hoping if Owen hangs out with her enough, it will rub off on him, cause I haven't seen more than 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep since March 1.

This was a quick photo shoot just for fun of Kiley at 4.5 months. She's pretty cute, eh? Love that laugh.

Getting married at 8,000 feet has it's perks, this sunset view is one of them. It's probably one of the best views in all of Arizona. Studio update

PHEW. Done with the third coat of varnish on the floors at the new studio space. We are going for a very weathered, rustic look on the floors. Painting is completed, we did the ceiling in chocolate brown and walls in a silvery blue. Hum, blue and brown-- our colors! All our furniture has arrived and is in boxes... Sunday is unpacking day. Special thanks to Kim Duncan to helping us design the space. Lighting is on the way and we are going to be open for First Friday Flagstaff, Oct. 3. Thanks to sister Kate for helping with the floors and to Jamelle's dad who helped us make the stairs go bye bye-- there was this horrible staircase that just went down into the dungeon under our space... and well, we weren't ready to tackle the dungeon quite yet.

I've run into a technical error on my hard drive #2. I can read but not write to it. No bueno. It's put production on hold for a few days. I called Apple today and decided... that I'm copying everything off it now, trashing it and loading up a new one. Sounded better than shipping it to Phoenix to discover that I have to do the aforementioned task. Don't worry, I'm all backed up but still it's scary when hard drives take a dive.

I haven't ventured into this world of High School seniors as much as Jamelle, but Cameron + Kelly Studios will be offering LOTS of senior sessions for '09 (if you have time) and '10. This is Jenna and Emily of Flag High. These two have been best buds pretty much their whole lives and Matt --er Mr. Clark has known them almost 10 years. In case you have missed the news, I will be officially joining Cameron's photo biz in a little less than 3 weeks. We will officially become Cameron + Kelly Studios. So, I thought I would introduce myself... I'm Jamelle Kelly. I've been working with Cameron this past year and we have decided to merge our photo businesses and build off each others strengths. Steve and Carol have been together forever. They even went to prom together! When they called me to shoot their wedding, they said, "we've seen your work and we've seen your own wedding in Arizona Bride magazine and we want to pull off a similar event." So I gave them all the names of my great vendors and when I got to their wedding I have to admit I was a little nostalgic -- only two years ago it was me getting married in that same location (they actually picked a different spot but a few vendors were having a hard time managing the road logistics so it was changed to Hart Prairie). Anywhooo they "one-upped" me in many regards. Their ceremony location was tucked away behind some Aspen trees and it was beautiful (ours was too close to the tent) and they had lawn games and well, a better portable restroom facility. Me, I chose to save money on the port-a-potty-- yes, it was the regular old deal blue and everything. Carol and Steve; however, went all out with this ROYAL restroom and believe me it was worth it. Check out the totally RAD detail of the photographs they printed up, cut out, and pasted to construction paper and then hung on the "walk" towards the ceremony. Every guest stopped to check out the photos. Also their friends cut out these Aspen tree rounds and did flower arrangements, which turned out beautiful. Oh, oh, the pirates. Steve and Carol had been threatening to do a Pirate theme wedding for years and so Steve's family brought some pirate parafanilia to the wedding and we took some funny photos. That's Steve's sister and Dad posing: ARRRRrrrrrRRR! HAD to post this NOW!

back to school cold and merger update

Matt, my husband, is a teacher. He's been back at school for a month now and we got sick this week... a 'back to school' cold as I've been calling it. So I've been trying really hard to recover fast and I've been sleeping during Owen's naps instead of working. It hit me hard on Wednesday and I'm starting to feel better tonight. It certainly does NOT help that Owen is teething (big time) and up every hour every night this week. Poor little guy, he's cutting the top four teeth-- big ones--! At any rate, I'm going to bed... hopefully the boy and I will sleep.

Good news! Gran Clark is coming for a week and I will hopefully catch up on lots of editing. She is ticked pink to watch Owen while I work.

Update on the merger... I'm merging my business with my assistant, Jamelle Kelly. We are becoming Cameron and Kelly Studios. Jamelle will be expanding the portrait experience so I'll be officially offering kids, babies, doggies, high school seniors, etc. Our new pad in downtown Flagstaff just got painted (brown and blue, of course). Now we are sanding the floors... photos to come tomorrow. The talented Kim Duncan is doing the interiror design.

New website, new prints, new albums, new, new, new! We will have our soft opening Oct. 1 and Grand Opening in Nov. More news to follow... stay tuned.

101 in 1001, stolen post

I wrote these goals in November 2007 when I was pregnant and not sure if I wanted to tell the whole world wide web (AKA I was in denial re: pregnancy). Anyway, goals are to be shouted from the mountain tops and thus, you will fulfill them (at least that's how it works for me). So I give you... my goals, in life, love, business and baby... all there for me to live up too. What's neat is that I haven't read them since I wrote them in November and now I'm going to make them part of my blog much like photographers Melissa Jill and Jessica Claire have. When I am at a loss for a post, I'm going to do one on a goal I've completed. I need to catch up on these...
P.S. those highlighted in yellow are completed and will be blogged eventually with photos... the red one is impossible now, I didn't complete it, probably because I didn't post these goals :( Anyway, it was interesting to read these after not looking at them since November. I realized that I work towards my goals (slowly) without posting them. Jo + Austin | Forest Highlands, private residence | August 30, 2008

So if you (or your parents) happen to have a gorgeous second home in Forest Highlands... why not get married there? Great idea! Most people underestimate the simplicity of a small ceremony, AKA just family. This is a great way to split up the events so you do not have to feed 100+ guests. If you have the ceremony on a Thursday or even weeks before your reception, you can relax and just "throw a party." This is a bit less traditional, but as you might know my advice is about weddings is to DO WHAT YOU WANT! It's your day. If a big ceremony with everyone watching makes you nervous.... don't do it! Plus you usually get to have two outfits (and two pairs of shoes... am I appealing to you ladies yet)?

Jo and Austin made it simple and it was great. There were 3 babies in the family under three, two of them were 5 & 6 months respectively so it made sense to have a nice small family style event. I was only there for three hours, but we got some great shots anyway. Here are two quick ones

My little guy is six months old. Owen, just like Matt and I, loves to eat. I am making his baby food (#95 on my goals) after reading a great book Jamelle gave me, Super Baby Food. It's easy! You basically puree anything and then freeze it in an ice cube tray, pop the trays, put the food cubes in freezer storage bags and defrost when baby needs to eat. SUPER easy and way cheaper than jars. I thought, "nothing could be easier than the jars" but this truly is a great system. I highly recommend this book.

My pal, Mary Jessica, who used to be my favorite reporter when I worked at the Athens Banner-Herald, has been kind enough to contribute to my baby business blog. While I was in Athens last month I photographed her precious child. To all you mommies out there I know how hard it is to snap that shutter fast enough to catch a two year old. Practically impossible without a professional camera. Good thing for f-stop 1.2 and my 85. I can't love that lens enough.

I've been a member of WPJA (wedding photojournalist association) since 2004 and I've placed many times in their quarterly contest, 6th, 8th, 4th (I was robbed)-- you get the idea. However, one doesn't get the blasted gold medallion next to your name unless you win a first, second or third-- kinda like the Olympics (then again, not) THANK YOU Scott and Maureen for walking into perfect light... snap, I got this moment and remember seeing the shadow as I was walking behind them. I thought "BOOYA! Contest entry!" I LOVE real moments like this...this is why I do what I do. I must admit, I haven't been entering much over the last year but now I'm re-energized.

Sunflowers and Shoot-Q in Flagstaff

Ah the Sunflowers... more sunflower photos. Katrina and Hollye, two of my best friends in the wedding photo industry, came up to Flag for a visit. We don't see each other enough.

When I'm not tending to the baby, attempting to nourish myself, working on my business, shooting photos, or sleeping, I'm mountain biking. I even rode 17 miles this past Saturday. It was 4 hours and yes, I thought I might die during the first hour; however, I pulled through like a champ, came home, put the baby down for a nap, and took one myself. That's what I do on non-wedding-Saturdays while Shoot-Q is working for me. Mountain biking is made possible by my beloved husband, Matt. Thanks honey for babysitting our boy.

There are a few shots of me mountain biking in the sunflowers... Thanks to my local adventure photographer friend, Dawn Kish. She shot some video for the Shoot-Q ad campaign (they asked me to participate). The question I was supposed to answer was "What were you doing while Shoot-Q worked for you?" but Dawn asked me "How does that make you feel booking a wedding through Shoot-Q, and I answer...(this is obviously a blooper)

Sarah and RJ | Chapel of the Holy Dove | Flagstaff, AZ

If you are getting married in Flagstaff in late July or August, it will most likely rain on your parade. Right now we are in the "monsoon" season. It rains heavily for a few hours every afternoon. This is not always a horrible thing... but Saturday August 16 it rained ALL afternoon and evening, definitely putting a damper on Sarah and RJ's wedding. Luckily they got married in the Chapel of the Holy Dove, which is a tiny little public chapel with a great view of the peaks (if it's not raining). I was really looking forward to my lovely bride and groom in a beautiful field of sunflowers with the peaks as a backdrop. No such luck!

Sunflowers are native wildflowers here but they only bloom once during the entire year and this year they are ENORMOUS. I convinced Sarah and RJ to go back out with me on Monday, but you guessed it, more rain, yet we found some sunflowers and sunshine to go with 'em. I also shot them in the studio, just in case the rain didn't let up for us a second time.

This wedding was part of my 2008 "Baby Owen Special." I rarely shoot less than a full day (10 hours). It's difficult to fully document wedding events in less time and stay true to my style (which captures moments from preparation to the end of the evening) This year; however, I had Baby Owen and many families convinced me to shoot their event for less time. It pains me to leave early before the reception has even started, but alas, these are the sacrifices you (temporarily) make when you have a little one. On the way back from Athens to the Atlanta airport we spent the night with Matt's cousin Chris and his wife, Taylor and their daughter, Evy. Evy was very interested in holding the baby, feeding the baby and overall was a great big helper. I heard she cried a lot the day we left. I was at Chris and Taylor's house for a total of 5 hours before I went to sleep, 2 of which had natural light. We got up the next day and left. I promise to take more photos next time I see cute little Evelyn!

P.S Evy is HYPER camera aware. Many four to five year old suffer from this "affliction." It's hilarious-- she is like a little model; however, it does makes the documentary photos hard... see example below -- hee hee.

Summertime: vacation & Owen

If you are wondering where your June wedding photos are... they are coming THIS WEEK! I took a personal vacation for 10 days back East, so I'm about 10 days behind.

We weren't sure we'd make it for our annual trip to Cape Cod with my family this summer. I was very nervous about flying with a five month old. I really didn't want to be the lady on the plane with the crying baby. Turns out that was the least of my problems (he didn't make a peep on any flight). Mostly baby Owen didn't want to sleep in new places. But other than sleep, we had a blast visiting with my Mom & Dad, and my brother and sister-in-law and their two kids: Karolyna and Timmy. We ate lobsters, we walked on the beach... and I ended up napping a lot since Owen wasn't sleeping well. I wanted badly to document Cape Cod and do a photo safari around Harwich but alas, I didn't make much time for it. I did make time to ride Karla's road bike a couple of days and that felt great. In any free time I get, I like to exercise to maintain my sanity and my waistline :)

If you are wondering where the heck sister Kate is... well she is fighting forest fires all summer out West. We have to change our summer beach trip to hang out with Kate and Norm and we are working on it for next year.

There will be some back blogging, indeed. Sorry, blog-ville, I didn't want to tote my 5 month old AND my laptop and my camera rig on our first baby plane trip. Next time, next time.

Anywhoo, Jason and Sue are married! Our mutual friend Jason "introduced" Matt and I or rather, we met by coincidence at Jason's house 6 years ago. Whatever. We are so happy for Sue and Jason glad they sealed the deal. Needless to say, we couldn't miss this wedding and Matt was a groomsmen...Sue and Jason wanted me to have "fun" at the wedding and not "work" but I took my camera and a couple lenses because I can't just sit there while great moments occur. I ADORE the shot of Sue reaching out to touch Jason as he read his vows. I just shot the ceremony and enjoyed the rest of the evening with friends while Owen hung out with his Gran (Matt's mom lives in Athens). Thank you Gran Sarah for putting our boy to bed and letting us go into a real live bar. We haven't exactly made bar-hopping a priority since the baby was born so that was really fun.

We were in Athens for 2 nights and it wasn't long enough. Next time I'll take some cool shots of one of my favorite towns.

Meghan & Mike's Wedding | Flagstaff, AZ | Thornagers

Meghan and Mike were troopers. First the bride could NOT have been more calm and relaxed while she was getting ready. She had great energy and looked amazing especially for 8AM. This wedding was unique for many reasons, but mostly because I don't shoot many daytime events. This was a 10AM ceremony followed by a brunch. It was lovely to have all that daylight and we had so much fun with our photo shoot. We just marched downtown and found as much great light as possible and even tried on some cowboy hats! Next to the reception at Thornagers, How many wedding receptions include a father daughter dance featuring STEP aerobics? Apparently both Meghan and her Dad teach STEP at FAC (I teach spinning there) Adorable! Thanks M&M for being such an incredibly flexible and fun couple that was willing to try anything!

technical note: I used some great new PhotoShop actions for the ceremony photos. The Church of the Nativity is gorgeous, dark and very classy, so I thought I'd give the images a similar look. Thanks to Totally Rad Actions it was possible.

I'm addicted. I watch LOST on abc.com and I just can't stop. It's so fun-- no commercials (just little 30 second interludes) and the whole episode is done in 42 minutes. If you can imagine saving 18 minutes is a godsend when you have an infant. TV on demand, that's what I'm talking about! I don't even have to have one of those Tivo things. Watching TV is free and it looks awesome on my 23" high def monitor! It's my new reason to love my high speed internet. I've got to stop watching it though, I've got a business to run.

Carol and Steve have been together for 13 years and you can tell! Loving laughter, and an uncanny understanding of one another are some of this couple's qualities. They tell me their wedding was inspired by my own event, and I will admit, it was similar and even a little strange to be out there at the same time and place as our wedding two years ago. Personally, I think they improved upon a good thing :) The weather was perfect and the light was incredible. I really enjoyed our portrait session and haven't gotten photos like these before (ironically at my own event, I didn't know about this hidden valley behind the Aspens). I adore this iconic wedding image. Full post later, when I catch up on June weddings. I am just about done with June 6 &7 so stay tuned.

Camping in Hart Prairie | Flagstaff

It seems a tradition that each year we go out to the spot where we got married here in Flagstaff at Hart Prairie and camp out. This year we brought out the vans. D.Kish brought her gimpy arm (went boom boom on a climbing photo shoot) and Benson, Gomez and Erin-Kate brought their Westy (theirs is pretty sweet) and we brought the red stripe (our van). Have I mentioned that Matt is OBSESSED with the GoWesty.com site? He has given up (for now) his sports car addition and traded it for VW vanagon obsession. If Go Westy got a dime for every click Matt clicks on that site, they'd be RICH. Keep in mind an average GoWesty Vanagon costs like $45,000. Yes, I know. I know. Anyway, Owen was chillin' in his bear costume coupled with a cute ears hat that our friend Anne made for him. We hope Anne will make him another one as he outgrows this one and maybe a matching one for Mommy.

June 21, Donielle & Brett were married at Seven Canyons, which is a glorious private residence golf club in Sedona, AZ. It boasts incredible views of red rocks without actually hiking or driving into the desert. It was a gorgeous backdrop for a wedding, but rare, since you have to be a member or owner to have a wedding event there. This first image was inspired by a LIFE magazine photo shoot by Howell Conant. I saw this curtain at Donielle's villa and really wanted to try using it.

Um, hello happy accident! I was actually trying to set this shot up with my pocket wizards, which somehow got switched to the wrong channel moments before I clicked the shutter... BUT how about a little neighborly flash? I caught the flash of an innocent by-standard, which saved the day.

Then, after the wedding, we borrowed Flagstaff Fire Engine #1 and proceeded downtown...does it get cuter than this? There are so many more... but you will have to check back to see them!

Elissa & Matt's Wedding | L'Auberge de Sedona

Family and friends flew into Arizona for Elissa & Matt's destination wedding at L'Auberge de Sedona On May 7, 2008. Their wedding included an elegant hillside ceremony followed by a creekside reception. Practically all Elissa's friends at the wedding had known her for 20+ years. As someone said during the toasting, this reveals loyalty and lifelong friendships that are rare in our lives today. As a jellybean fanatic, I loved the little jars of jellybeans that they used for table seating. Everyone ate outside enveloped by the warm summer air of Sedona.

Maureen & Scott Wedding | Arizona Snow Bowl | Flagstaff, AZ

Ahhh local Flagstaff weddings in June... it seems I am finally shooting more locally and as I always say, it's nice to work in my own backyard. Maureen and Scott were laid back and "down-to-the-fun" couple. They we SO excited to be married and they are cuddled up in nearly every photo. Love was definitely in the air. One of my favorite details was Maureen's something blue, which was a pair of Chaco sandles. It doesn't get more FLAG than that!

side note: I am going to post weddings as soon as possible to get some photos online and then add the slideshows later. Give me two weeks to figure out how to edit 3,000 images a week AND take care of a newborn. No worries. It's all about the nap times and Daddy is off work for summer!

Juggling Mommyhood and my career

So I have just about the perfect job to be a Mom and still maintain my career. This is mainly because I do 85% of my work at home. In 2008, I took on less work (about half the normal amount) so that I could hang out with Owen as much as possible. I think keeping my business is going to protect my sanity in the long run, at least that is the plan (plus I like to be busy). Everything seems to be going well, with one exception: dun dun daaa "The Bottle Chronicles." Sometimes, as you can imagine, things don't go exactly as planned with a baby. For example, Owen won't take a bottle. This doesn't seem to be that big of a problem until you realize that I work 12-hour wedding days AND I am his only food source. If you've ever seen me shoot a wedding you know that I rarely sit down, much less take a 15 minute break, but this summer is different. My little Owen needs to eat every 3-4 hours and I have to feed him. So we did a trial run this past weekend with 100% success. Matt drove his *new* 1984 Westfalia camper van (I'd hardly call it new) to both events and brought Owen to me for nursing sessions. Luckily, my husband is a trooper and my clients are too. Matt even crossed Oak Creek 3 times on Saturday to bring Owen to me for his lunch, dinner and pre-bedtime snack. Mommy and Daddy didn't get all that much sleep in the lovely camper pop-top, but it was fun never-the-less. Photo by Jake Bacon. Camper photos coming soon...

I am coming out of my maternity leave. So blog posting should become more regular. It's hard to get back into the swing of things but luckily I really enjoy my job... so here goes some back-blogging. All my May shoots should be up shortly...

I love when former wedding clients call and tell me they are pregnant. Unfortunately, because I shoot so many destination weddings it's hard to get together for photos with many of my clients. Luckily, Greg and Ashley, who live in Seattle, have family connections with Arizona and made some time on Mother's Day to shoot some photos. Catalog Choice

Most people probably don't know this about me, but I really hate junk mail, phone solicitations, and spam...I especially despise the catalogs that end up in a landfill or even at your local recycling facility. I'm practically CRAZED about calling the catalog companies and getting off the lists. Just ask Matt. It's one of the reasons he loves me.

What to do? I usually call the number on the catalog and ask to be removed from the mailing list. This takes an extraordinary effort considering the number of catalogs we seem to receive. Every Tom, Dick and Sally is selling my address, apparently.

So I was reading Sunset magazine and well, low and behold, a great new website has emerged to solve this very problem. Just go to Catalog Choice and set yourself up to decline all your catalogs. When you get them, you can put in your customer number and let them do the rest or just simply try to decline using your address. It's really cool. You might notice the link on this blog.

I'm excited to be offering a new line of albums... La-Vie Album. Pricey? Yes, but aren't they all? Worth it? 110%. When I think of wedding albums, I try to think of them as an investment in your family heritage. After all, if you could peek through at your grandmother's wedding including all the lovely details like her shoes, dress, jewelry and get a glimpse of her personality-- wouldn't that be worth thousands of dollars? Answer: YES! So remember this album is not just for YOU, it's for YOUR FAMILY and your family's family. It will be an heirloom passed down though the generations. So when people ask me about albums, I say, yes, definitely get one, it's the best way to memorialize your family's history and it might be the only time in your life that you hire a professional photographer (although, PLEASE have your kids photographed).

Style Me Pretty | Main Page Feature!

I'm so humbled and so SO excited to be featured on the main page of Style Me Pretty's blog. Abby, the editor, selects fabulous weddings to showcase so readers can get inspired... so I submitted Joey and Stephen's wedding and she selected it. This makes my day for a couple reasons (1) my marketing skillz have taken a back seat over the last three months due to my little bundle of joy and (2) it always feels good to be recognized.

Flagstaff Photography Center -- Photo Booth

The whole family took a walk downtown (I pretty much do this daily) but this time stopped off at the Flagstaff Photography Center and did a quick photo booth session. I love the first one with Matt and Owen. Matt wondered when he began to resemble Clark Griswald (Chevy Chase). I had to laugh at that!

Mellena + Stan | Wedding | Thornagers | Flagstaff, AZ

What a special treat to be privy to this couple's vows on April 26, 2008. Mellena and Stan are soul mates and they waited to meet each other. I cried several times during their ceremony just watching the two of them interact (could be the super mommy hormones--hummm). Mellena is the type of gal who my husband would call an "energy supplier"-- she brings the party to the party and is a genuine friend. She sang "natural woman" to Stan at the reception and it was a HOT number--Stan was very touched. This was my first "job" after delivering Owen (and technically a breech of my maternity leave) but it was well worth the 3.5 hours I spent away from my son. Congrats to you both-- enjoy your photos! I would like to mention that I did not "tell/direct" Mellana and Stan to do anything in ANY of these photos, it's pure love and you can tell.
